We Are Hiring a Market Assistant

This position is being advertised under the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) initiative. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a refugee under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and must have been a full-time student during the previous academic year and intend to return to full-time studies in the next academic year.

Temporary, full-time, 30-35 hrs/week, 8 week term; must work Saturdays. Wage: $11.25

The Market Assistant will work under the guidance of the volunteer manager to promote the Bridgewater Farmers' Market as a weekly community building event that provides access to healthy food and supports rural livelihoods and rural economic development. In particular, the Market Assistant will be involved in the planning and implementation of the Bridgewater Farmers’ Market’s children’s program, offering interesting, healthy eating and living related educational activities for children aged 6 – 12 years old. This involves liaising with local schools, making sure program materials are on hand, and delivering the program on-site. The Market Assistant will be helping with the wrap up of the Market’s 2nd Annual Food Truck Festival. The assistant will be instrumental in promoting proper waste sorting and waste diversion. The Market Assistant will help with the logistics and promotion of the market, e.g. setting up and taking down tents and seating area, and updating and distributing market posters/flyers, social media, newsletter, etc. The Market Assistant will research recipes to educate customers on easy ways to prepare farm products sold at the market.

Requirements

Must be 18 - 30 years old

Preferred: one year university or college in a related field (e.g. Business Administration, Applied Human Nutrition, Child and Youth Study, Public Relations, Municipal Planning, Environmental & Sustainability Studies, etc.)

Not an immediate family member related a member of the Bridgewater Farmers Market; Must be available to work every Saturday; Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs; Must be organized, able to take direction, and able to work independently on assigned projects

Experience and/or strong interest in areas such as farmers' markets, agriculture, food security, local economic development, community development and nutrition, food and/or cooking will be considered an asset, as will interest in future employment in these areas.
